Digital vs. Traditional Supply Chain Management Strategies Trade-offs: A Contingency Framework
Abstract
In an increasingly interconnected global economy, supply chain modernization is crucial for businesses. Digital transformation can enhance supply chain resilience, yet few firms are satisfied with their digitization efforts. Integrating digital technologies into supply chain management presents both opportunities and challenges, making the choice between digital and traditional strategies contingent on contextual factors. This requires a nuanced understanding of the trade-offs between approaches. This study uses a descriptive research design to explore this issue in detail. A comprehensive literature review synthesizes existing knowledge and develops a contingency framework, manifested as research propositions, for digital versus traditional supply chain management strategies. Future research can empirically validate these propositions by exploring the relationships between contingency factors, strategic choices, and supply chain performance.
